Beverley has put together some of her top tips on choosing a new hair colour, focusing on making the best of your natural colouring...

Deciding what hair colour have is important and exciting; you wear your hair every day so it is your number 1 accessory!

When choosing a colour it’s not only about what colour you like on somebody else but also what will actually suit you, so when considering colours for my clients I like to take into account their skin colour undertone and natural haircolour, it’s something which has been an important part of my thoughts and recommandations in consultations since becoming a Wella Master Colour Expert.

Cool and Warm

Turn over your arm and look at the veins on your fore arm, are they blue or of a green colour? If you hold an ivory piece of fabric and then a white piece of fabric below your face in the mirror, which one makes you look the best?

If they look blue and white suits you best  it is a good indicator that you have a cool undertone to your skin, if they are greeny and ivory suits you best you have a warm undertone. When it comes to choosing haircolour, mahoganys, violet based reds, and icy cool blonds will look amazing for a cool skin tone.

Warm coppers, honey blonds,  rich reds, caramels and golden browns work best on warmer skin tones. Choosing a haircolour  that is harmonious with your natural skin tone will result in a look which makes your eyes sparkle, your skin look radiant and you will look healthy.

However, this is not an exact science and what make up you wear, your current hair colour and fake tan can affect how colours look on you.

Dark or LIght

As a general idea, if you stay within two shades of your natural colour then a change of haircolour is fairly easy and stress free. When lightening or darkening hair more than this then be prepared for drama! Hair is one of the first things people notice so expect comments and compliments.

When your hair is changed dramatically then it’s important to consider make up is something that you might need to change.

My neighbours at Urban Decay recommend these tips for a change of hair colour:

When going lighter blonde, eye colour should be lighter with nudes or pink lips to compliment. Going darker then go heavier on the eyes and for reds on the lips, remember that the choice of make up again still depends on the undertone of the skin.

We're excited to let you know that Hairsalon by Regis and Urban Decay in Debenhams are teaming up until the end of September  to offer great consultations to hair colour clients.  Any person who has a hair colour in the salon Monday to Thursday can receive an Urban Decay consultation and makeover for £15 (instead of the usual £25) and the £15 is redeemable against Urban Decay products.
