Swimwear season means getting nearly naked in public… Don’t panic – we’ve called on men’s fashion blogger Marcus Jaye, AKA TheChicGeek, to guide you through your swim shorts shop. Men’s swimwear was once an I’ll-wear-last-year’s-if-the-elastic-hasn’t-gone attitude, but there’s good reason to take time out to find a new pair that suits your style and body shape. You’ll feel confident when you hit the beach – and who doesn’t want that. So what do you plan to do on your holiday? If it’s a mix of lounging, sunbathing and a few rides on a hired jet ski, then you may need more than one pair: one practical; one posing.
If in any doubt, go up a size. There’s nothing worse than trying to squeeze into a pair of trunks that are too small, as it just draws unwanted attention to the wrong areas.
How high will you go?
Over the last few years, men’s swimwear has been shrinking. Blame it on David Gandy but there’s certainly more thigh on show now at the beach.
But let’s start with the longest… The board short style looks best on taller guys (Matthew McConaughey always rocks it), as it can make guys with shorter legs look stumpy.
The popular running short style (think loose but higher up the thigh) is a real winner for shorter men. And if you think you won’t have time to change before dinner, you can always opt for a tailored beach-to-bar swim short. Stick to a plain shade, team with a smart T-shirt and espadrilles and no one will be any the wiser.
Then there’s the retro-looking, mid-thigh swimming trunk (step forward Daniel Craig, Bond-style). Great on all ages and body types, just ensure you try a few sizes out as they’re very fitted.
Finally, the bravest of souls can step out in barely-there briefs. Small frames AKA Tom Daley can pull off this Speedo look… just.
Let’s talk shades
When it comes to colour, navy and black are safe, timeless choices that will let you blend into the beach background. Out-there neons and bold Baywatch reds tend to look better on darker skin tones (perfect for the end of your two-week break). And if you opt for David Beckham-esque white, just remember to do the see-through test before you hit the water…
If patterns are more your style, just bear in mind they draw attention. If you’re carrying a little weight, then have a look for smaller, micro prints. Another option is an ombré (two-tone) shade: colours that start dark and lighten towards the legs will make you appear slimmer.
…and happy holidays. Take my lead and pack a few options, then see how you feel when you get there. Whatever you do, though, leave the birthday suit option to Orlando Bloom!
