Listen up, it’s officially time to think about your swimwear. But before you have a full-blown panic about finding your dream one-piece or bikini, we’re going to let you in on some handy shopping secrets. Our aim? To make you feel fabulous whether you’re at the lido three miles from home or an exotic beach 3,000 miles away (yes, please!).
Conquer the changing room
Confession time: shopping for swimwear can be tough for most of us women (move along, Cara and Kendall, nothing to read here). Give yourself a head-start and, before heading to the shops, get prepared. Do whatever it takes to make you feel confident: get your hair done, slap on some fake tan, shave your legs, or even treat yourself to a beach-inspired cocktail – whatever floats your boat, and whatever it takes to get you relaxed. Head out the door in an outfit that’s easy to take off and throw back on. If you want, take a friend with you (we fall more into the lone shopper camp) but remember to trust your gut instinct, rather than some pal’s insistence that something ‘really suits you’.
Keep an open mind
While you may think it’s better to shop online and try on at home, in our experience it’s better to head in store and grab as many different styles and sizes as you can possibly carry to the changing room. Look out for adjustable straps and tie bottoms – this means you can alter them to fit your shape. Most brands sell mix-and-match tops and bottoms separately, so you don’t need to worry about sticking to one size either. Forget the usual body shape wisdoms: don’t just try on what apparently suits your shape. Try on everything to get an idea of what you like – you might be surprised that, say, a halter-neck swimsuit, which you’ve always steered clear of, looks great.
Experiment with colours and prints
If zingy brights and crazy prints aren’t usually your thing, then swimwear is your chance to experiment – after all, there’s something less scary about rocking an all-over Tropicana floral print on a swimsuit than a pair of trousers. Colour-block swimsuits (with two contrasting shades) are bold without being in your face, while zipper details will add a sporty feel to bikinis. For SS17, there are some key styles you’ll see all over the high street – namely, gingham, tassels and ruffles. If you fancy something more classic, monochrome and white/navy stripes never go out of style. And let’s not forget the slimming and chic miracle that is an all-black swimsuit. Opt for one with a high leg and that’s your beach appeal sorted for the whole summer.
All hail the cover-up
Whether you’ve overdone the sunbathing or you’re heading to the beach bar, don’t forget a cover-up to complement your new swimwear. But before you reach for your usual two suspects, the sarong or kaftan, we’re loving the idea of a lightweight shirt dress or a draped jersey dress.
So go forth and shop – and be smug in the knowledge that you are going to seriously rock it in your swimwear this summer.
