Summer Nails

Put your French mani on hold for a few months – now’s the perfect time to go wild with colour, pattern and metallic. We asked award-winning nail stylist Metta Francis to show us her favourite designs of the summer. And the best bit? These trends are all super easy to recreate – although you may have to rope a friend in for that tricksy second hand…

Rainbow Clash Nails - Selfridges, Debenhams, Boots, Superdrug

Why wear one eye-catching shade when you can wear several? There’s no worry about your nail colour not matching your outfit here – the clashier, the better.

How to do it: Apply a base coat on each finger, then neatly apply two coats of each bright colour on alternating fingers. Finally, apply a top coat for lasting colour and shine.
Try these: Vernis Nail Polish in Riviera, £20, DIOR at Selfridges; Vernis Nail Polish in Early, £19.50, DIOR at Selfridges; Nail Polish in Rainbow Riot - Pink Rave, £11, Nails Inc at Debenhams; Rimmel 60 Seconds Super Shine By Rita Ora in Roll in the Grass, £2.99, Superdrug; Essie Spring Collection 2017 Nail Colour in All The Wave, £7.99, Boots

Negative Space Nail Art - Boots, Superdrug

A huge trend for this year, negative space nail art is where your uncoloured nail peeps through bold polishes. The half-moon manicure, with white and bold hues, is fresh and fun for sunny days.

How to do it: Apply base coat, then apply two coats of white polish to the top two-thirds of the nail. Using a thin, striping brush, paint a line of colour in your chosen shade at the bottom of the white. Add a second coat of colour to each line to make it nice and strong then apply top coat.
Try these: Barry M Gelly Nail Paint in Cotton, £3.99, Superdrug; Barry M Gelly Nail Paint in Sugar Plum, £3.99, Superdrug

Metallic Ombre Nails - Selfridges, Debenhams, Superdrug, Boots

Ombré hair may be on the way out, but it’s still a massive trend for nails – and we couldn’t be happier! Prepare for oohs, aahs and ‘oh, I need that too’ from all fellow nail fanatics.

How to do it: Apply a base coat. Cut up a kitchen sponge, slightly bigger than the size of your thumb nail. Paint one coat of holographic polish on all nails. On the sponge, paint three thick horizontal sections with the metallic shades (just wide enough to cover the whole nail), holographic at the bottom towards the cuticle, maybe a blue ice in the middle and a copper at the top, where the free edge is. Make sure the colours overlap to create the ombré look. Dab the sponge on the nail very gently starting in middle, then moving to the left then right, ensuring you cover all areas of the nail. Repeat. Apply top coat.
Try these: Vernis Couture Nail Polish in Blazing Bronze £20, DIOR at Debenhams; Barry M Molten Metal in Holographic Lights, £3.99, Superdrug; Barry M Molten Metal in Blue Glacier, £3.99, Superdrug
